Portraits with Dan Schultz

This class will focus on drawing and painting portraits from life and will include a review of the fundamentals.
Compositional methods, tips for achieving accuracy, keys to correctly seeing value and color, and tips on working with edges will be discussed and utilized. We will also talk in depth about color theory. The class is open to all levels..

Dan Schultz

Dan was born in New Mexico and has spent the majority of his life in the southwest. Painting figurative images in his studio and landscapes on location, Dan has gained national recognition for his work—in 2004, Southwest Art magazine featured him in its "21 Under 31" article. He has participated in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions and has also received various awards for his plein air and studio paintings including recent awards from the Art Renewal Center and the Portrait Society of America. Supply List
If you’re drawing with charcoal
:
• Small pad of paper and pencil
• One 14” x 17” or larger pad of Drawing Paper and/or Tracing Paper
• Large board with clips for supporting your pad of paper
• Several compressed charcoal sticks (recommended instead of pencils), I use General’s brand
• Several vine charcoal sticks (medium or soft)
• Kneaded eraser
• Long pencil or paint brush to use for measuring
• Chamois cloth (optional)

If you’re painting with oils:
• Small pad of paper and pencil
• Canvas: I recommend bringing 9” x 12” up to 16” x 20” sized canvases (you can use canvas panels, stretched canvas, or even tear-off canvas pads). Bring a few to each class.
• Brushes I use:
• #2, #4, #6, #8 bristle flats (Holbein’s Killington bristle flats, available at Meininger’s)
• #2, #4, #8, #12 sable flats (Royal & Langnickel sable flats, series 5590, availiable at Cheap Joe’sArt Stuff -- www.CheapJoes.com).
• Paint (oils): These are my palette colors and brands that I am currently using. You may get them all if you wish or use whatever colors you normally prefer (you should at least have the first four).
• Titanium White (Utrecht, Winsor & Newton or Gamblin)
• Cadmium Yellow (M. Graham & Co.) or Cadmium Yellow Pale (Winsor & Newton)
• Cadmium Red (M. Graham & Co. or Winsor & Newton)
• Ivory Black (M. Graham & Co., Winsor & Newton or Gamblin)
• Cadmium Lemon (Winsor & Newton)
• Cadmium Yellow Deep (Utrecht or Winsor & Newton)
• Yellow Ochre (Gamblin or Winsor & Newton)
• Terra Rosa (Winsor & Newton) or Venetian Red (Gamblin)
• Alizarin Permanent (Gamblin), or Alizarin Crimson
• Transparent Oxide Red (Rembrandt) or Transparent Earth Red (Gamblin)
• Viridian (Winsor & Newton or Gamblin)
• Cobalt Blue (Gamblin or M. Graham & Co.)
• Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) or Ultramarine Blue (Gamblin) or French Ultramarine

• Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits (no turpentine products, please)
• Container for holding mineral spirits and cleaning brushes
